Adults-only hotels in Formentera are a good choice if you are looking for a holiday for two with long days on the beach, Mediterranean cuisine and plenty of time outdoors. The Balearic island lies south of Ibiza and can be reached from there by ferry. Formentera has no regular passenger airport, so the journey usually takes you via Ibiza before continuing across the sea. The island’s location shapes the experience from the outset: short distances, flat landscapes, small towns and a coastline where bright sandy beaches alternate with rocky sections and clear water.
The island is easy to explore by bicycle, scooter or hire car. Between the towns, you will find landscapes of pine trees, juniper, dry-stone walls and cultivated land. It is lovely not to plan every moment of the day: drive to a beach in the morning, stop for lunch in a village and walk along the coast in the afternoon.
In the north, Ses Illetes lies on the Es Trucadors peninsula. The beach is known for its bright sand and clear water; nearby, you will find shallow lagoons, dunes and paths through the natural landscape. The area forms part of the Ses Salines d’Eivissa i Formentera Nature Park, which extends across parts of Ibiza and Formentera. For a day at the beach, it is worth setting off early and following the local guidance on protecting the dunes.
Playa Migjorn stretches along the southern side of the island across several coastal sections. Depending on where you go, you will find sandy beaches, rocks, beach bars and paths above the coast. The beach is ideal for a day without a fixed itinerary. In the west lie Sant Francesc Xavier, the island’s main town, and Sant Ferran de ses Roques. Sant Francesc is characterised by whitewashed houses, small shops and a central square. Sant Ferran is perfect for a stroll between cafés, restaurants and village streets.
In the east, the road climbs up to La Mola. The high plateau is characterised by open landscapes, stone walls and the lighthouse at the eastern tip of the island. A craft market takes place regularly in La Mola. Es Pujols on the north coast combines a beach with restaurants, cafés and a waterfront promenade. It is a practical choice if you would like to eat in the evening without travelling far or sit by the sea for a while.
The Gecko Hotel & Beach Club is located in Playa Migjorn and is a four-star adults-only hotel with boho-chic style, a pool among palm trees and a beach club on the coast.
The hotel caters to adult guests and combines its location at Playa Migjorn with a relaxed design. A restaurant and Bar & Lounge are part of the offering, so you can end the day with a meal or a drink. Rooms with a balcony or terrace provide a private outdoor space, while Wi-Fi and on-site parking add to the convenience. For couples looking for a child-free hotel close to the beach, the Gecko Hotel & Beach Club is a fitting choice.
From Playa Migjorn, you can combine different sides of the island: a morning on the southern beach, a trip to Sant Francesc Xavier and later sunset on the west coast. You can also combine a visit to La Mola with a market, a drive through the rural centre of the island and dinner in Es Pujols.
The traditional travel season for Formentera runs from spring to autumn. In spring, the island is at its best with fields in bloom and pleasant conditions for cycling. The summer months are ideal for swimming, days on the beach and long evenings outdoors. In autumn, the paths and villages become quieter again, while the sea often remains warm enough for swimming. Outside the high season, you should check in advance which restaurants, markets and ferry services are open or available.
To get there, you first fly to or otherwise travel to Ibiza, then take the ferry from there to Formentera. On the island, bicycles, scooters or a hire car make it easier to reach the different coastal sections and towns. If you would like to combine your stay with another island, you can also include adults-only hotels in Ibiza in your travel plans. Mallorca is another Balearic region to consider for a longer island trip.
Formentera’s cuisine combines fish, seafood, vegetables, bread and regional produce. Menus feature dishes such as fish with rice, grilled catch of the day, Ensalada payesa and Frit de polp. A local speciality is Peix sec, air-dried fish that is often used in salads. It goes well with bread and tomato, cheese, figs and herbal liqueur. In the restaurants of Es Pujols, Sant Francesc Xavier, Sant Ferran and around the beaches, you can choose between informal lunches and longer evening meals.
If you would like to organise your stay around particular themes, you will find more suitable ideas in the directory: the Gecko Hotel & Beach Club can be categorised as a boutique hotel, a hotel by the sea or a destination for a romantic break. This allows you to combine your search for an adults-only hotel with your personal ideas of the beach, style and time together.
